- Both stories are thought provoking and mysterious.
- Washington and Irving were very influenced by their time period.
- The main characters are similar. They both have quite the imagination.
- Characters are protrayed well.
Differences:
- Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hallow was dark and spooky. While Ambrose's Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge was very realistic. That could have happened to someone during the Civil War. Maybe Bierce based the story off of someone he knew in the Civil War who had a similar situation to Farquhar. Although his imagination/hallucinations wasn't exactly realistic. I don't necessarily think they would be in real life anyway.
- One story is focused on one main problem while the other has many problems.
I personally enjoyed Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge more. It was a faster moving book and had less going on.
Another note that I found was that the main characters both seemed to be in a confused state. However, one was because of the setting (night) while the other was a delirious state. Maybe from lack of oxygen?
