Job #3

Similarities:

  • Both stories are thought provoking and mysterious.
  • Washington and Irving were very influenced by their time period.
  • The main characters are similar. They both have quite the imagination.
  • Characters are protrayed well.

Differences:

  • Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hallow was dark and spooky. While Ambrose's Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge was very realistic. That could have happened to someone during the Civil War. Maybe Bierce based the story off  of someone he knew in the Civil War who had a similar situation to Farquhar. Although his imagination/hallucinations wasn't exactly realistic. I don't necessarily think they would be in real life anyway.
  • One story is focused on one main problem while the other has many problems.
I personally enjoyed Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge more. It was a faster moving book and had less going on.

Job #2

I know this has kind of been going around in the different posts but why in the world did Bierce make everything so confusing and have us believe Farquhar was actually running away? Or at least why didn't he make it a little more clear? I thought it would have been more dramatic and sad if he actually saw his wife and then got shot. It made me dislike the book a little more (I still really like the book though). What are you feelings about it?

Job #1

"the next time they will use a charge of grape. I must keep my eye upon the gun; the smoke will aprise me-the report arrives too late, it lags behind the missle. That is a good gun." (ch.3 pg. 30)

I understood the story but this part tripped me up a little. What does Farquar  mean when he uses the word "grape"? I was thinking it was a certain method of attacking. I was also thinking it could be a part of the gun that could do harm. What made me think of these ideas was because they were well, obviously trying to kill him. Also because there are guns involved.
